STORY BEHIND THE PHOTO:
ICM photo of Lake Cerknica (slo. Cerkniško jezero), imitating it’s rising water level.
This photo is really special for me. My family on my father's side originates from here, and I always feel a special connection when I'm there. I also love how well the zoom effect captures the story of the intermittent lake.
ABOUT LAKE CERKNICA:
Lake Cerknica is one of the largest intermittent lakes in Europe. It appears every year on the karst field, caught between the Javorniki hills on one side and the Bloke plateau and Slivnica on the other. In the dry part of the year, the lake disappears, so you can row, fish, walk and mow a meadow in the same place all year round!
Usually, the water spills over a surface of more than 20km2, but when there is a lot of water, the surface of the lake measures around 26km2.
Lake is also truly remarkable nature reserve, being home area for 276 bird species.
